RM911 News:

The RM911 app is currently under development. Our app will revolutionize the way incident notifications and feeds appear in a mobile environment. It will have many features not yet implemented on our site such as incident location mapping and highly customizable notifications and alert methods. The app will allow our feeds to become more like channels. This will allow the listener to better tailor how they listen. You’ll be able to create a scan list, automatically follow your region, or automatically switch to the feed carrying a fresh incident. Check back with RM911 News for updates about its release.

RM911 Operations Guide
Tech specs and site features:

The following is an overview of the Radioman911.com project and a guide to understanding site functions and operation.

Radioman911.com (RM911) is designed to be viewed from a laptop or desktop computer (Mac or PC). For proper viewing and site functionality, it is required that you use the Firefox or Pale Moon browsers. Other browsers may appear to work but won’t display all our computer aided dispatch (CAD) features properly and/or allow multiple feeds to be played (Chrome) or to be played commercial free. Adding the AdBlock Plus “extension” for Firefox eliminates commercials added by our stream provider, Ustream. We currently offer 9 regional feeds and have 5 more coming online Spring 2015. Pale Moon is a copy of the Firefox engine by a Finnish company and AdBlock Plus works the same, but with different enhancements. Many people who have defected from Firefox to Pale Moon are satisfied users.

You can monitor our feeds individually via a mobile device with the free Ustream app. Searching for “911” will produce a list of our feeds. Listeners with iPads and Android phones have reported the ability to log in and view Radioman911.com along with the CAD but results vary and functionality is limited.

Logging in:

We understand it's a nuisance to have to click through the second login page that says "Continue on to Radioman911.com". That step is necessary for our current site design, however we will be able to eliminate that step in the next version.

A fresh login activates 24 hour access to Radioman911.com. After 24 hours you’ll be prompted to log in again which you should do from the link on the error message. Note: If you “Reload Tab" by right-clicking after typing anything on the site you may see a message asking whether you would like to "Cancel" or “Resend" your info. Choose "Cancel" or else your computer will resend your last post whether it be a CAD Chat entry or an Incident. This is another bug that we will be fixing.

Once the site loads, it is normal to see the top tab and lower left address bar flashing. This is evidence that the CAD is checking for updates. Use the "Screen Style" selection on the CAD Menu to choose between the "gray" background with black letters or the "black" background with white letters. The system will remember your selection which you may change at any time.

RM911 access levels:

There are 2 RM911 access levels. Member IDs are in blue. Members have the ability to post in the CAD Chat and F-2 Chat boards and in the Incident Notes section. Dispatcher IDs are in gold. Dispatchers have an Incident Entry section that allows them to create new incidents, upgrade and edit existing incidents and notes. Admin IDs are in red. Admins are senior dispatchers with additional site monitoring responsibilities.

Members are blue

Members may post on the CAD Chat and F-2 Chat boards and in the Incident Notes section.
Dispatchers are gold

Dispatchers have the ability to create a new incident and upgrade and edit existing incidents and notes.
Admins are red

Admins are the same as dispatchers with additional site monitoring responsibilities.

Participation:

Our reputation as a top source for reliable breaking public safety news relates directly to the dedication and attention to detail of our volunteer dispatchers and the willingness of our member listeners to participate by spotting emergencies and pointing the collective ears of the group in the right direction.

Since we came on the air in 2009, the RM911 project has transformed from a single, stereo feed covering the entire Chicagoland area into specific coverage areas with more digestible regions of traffic for the average listener. With the increase in number of feed choices, the chances increase that our

dispatchers could all be listening to something else when something new comes in.

That’s why we rely on your generosity in the form of your time and energy, to quickly and accurately post detailed information about an emergency, so that other members and dispatchers can switch on the appropriate feed early. Give the group a heads-up to a size-up if you will. A dispatcher can check the address out and prepare the incident so as soon as it's confirmed it’s ready to push.

How to relay incident info:

If you're hearing a major incident not listed on the CAD please type as much info as you have about it onto the CAD Chat. We prefer you post what you are hearing firsthand and we assume everyone is listening in real time. However, if you hear of an incident from another source please make sure to cite that source along with your info. If there’s a time delay in forwarding the info that should also be divulged. We’re only interested in creating a new incident entry for incidents that are still active. However, we are still interested seeing items that we may have missed posted on to the CAD Chat along with reference to their approximate time of occurrence.

FD dispatchers in Chicago often leave off the N,S,E,W portion of the address when dispatching a call. Please include the proper street direction when providing an address (1060 W Addison St). For intersections, it isn’t necessary to include the N,S,E,W (Addison St and Clark St). Please use Google to confirm the street name spelling and N,S,E,W direction and also the type of roadway (St, Rd, Ave) and structure type if possible. As an incident unfolds, you're encouraged to add major developments and progress reports directly into the Incidents Notes. Secondary info (color commentary) can be posted to the CAD Chat.

Incident Notes:

An Incident Note can only be attached to an incident after the incident has been created, however it can be typed into the Incident Notes entry box ahead of time. Once the incident appears, click the blue 4-digit # at the beginning of the incident line. You'll then see that Incident # populate in blue above both the Incident Notes area and entry box. Once your note is complete, click "Submit" to attach it to that incident. Incident Notes remain attached to incidents within the CAD Archive and may be republished as a timeline synopsis for major incidents.

Everyone is welcome to add notes to an existing incident. No one on our system has any ownership or "claim" to an incident or will have their feelings hurt if you add your contribution. Items such as background information that you may have personal knowledge of might be more appropriate in the CAD Chat, but often-times would be great additions to the Incident Notes as well. The cross-posting of very important information by copy and pasting to both CAD Chat and Incident Notes is encouraged. When an alarm level is upgraded by a RM911 dispatcher, an incident note about that upgrade is automatically generated in the Incident Notes. So it isn’t necessary to manually post alarm level upgrades to the Incident Notes.

Posting Dos and Don'ts:

Do use the built-in Firefox spell check on both the CAD Chat and Incident Notes. (red lines appear beneath questionable words, right clicking produces alternatives)

Do know or learn the difference between their, there, and they’re. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/misspelling

Don't use information heard on RM911 elsewhere without assisting our site. (Our only terms of service on signup) Don't share names of patients or criminal suspects unless publicly released by a law enforcement agency.

How to become a RM911 dispatcher:

Consideration as a dispatcher depends on your knowledge of our system and attention to detail you exhibit, as well as any past dispatching/public safety/news experience that you may have. Our standards for accurate information and attention to spelling and capitalization are very high. We want to ensure superior quality when the incident is pushed which will become even more critical once our app is released and has the ability to alert a large audience. If you wish to be considered for the dispatch team please send an email to radioman911info (at) gmail.com

Thank you for your participation in the RM911 project!
